Knitting techniques passed down for generations
This sweater has a history stretching back generations, taking shape on the coast of British Columbia, hand-knit using techniques passed down through coastal communities, largely unknown outside the region that made it. Wool was spun by hand, worked into a thick, textured yarn, and knit into bold patterns built to hold up against wind, rain, and cold. What resulted was a garment as practical as it was distinct, heavy, water-resistant, and made to be worn for decades. Over time, it grew into one of the most quietly iconic pieces of clothing to come out of the region, a craft few outside British Columbia ever came to know.
In 2016, FAIZ T.S. set out to contemporize the article. We applied considered design choices, refining the shape and silhouette, while keeping the process exactly where it began. Our wool is sourced from New Brunswick, and every sweater is still hand-knit by women artisans in British Columbia, with each piece taking up to 140 hours to complete from start to finish.
As long as we continue to offer this sweater, it will always be made in its country of origin, using the same traditional hand-knitting techniques that have defined it from the beginning. We see this not as a trend to chase, but as a craft to carry forward, one stitch, one artisan, and one sweater at a time.
The result is a true Canadian icon, made with the same patience it always required.
